I wish I lived in a zero crime neighbourhood. They are increasingly
becoming
a thing of the past it seems - Security occupies a lot of my waking and
sleeping thoughts.. but provides some material for the HA enthusiast to
tackle I guess.

If you have a Linux machine you could try that very capable app that has
been mentioned many times on this list but whose name escapes me now - the
one with the 'cat on the patio' - obviously well matched to the task at
hand. There must be a few less capable but still free Windows variants that
would suit. I think motion detection is likely to produce more predictable
results than a PIR.

Looks forward to seeing the video of the offender caught in the act
