A Master socket is one fitted with a ringing capacitor and is usually for
PBX
extensions. Some older installations may have a Master socket instead of an
NTE5. You are not allowed to wire directly into this, only plug into the
socket

The one with the half removeable faceplate is an NTE5 (Network Terminating
Equipment). This also contains a ringing capacitor and you are allowed to
wire
into the removeable section. It was specifically designed like that so that
all
customer wiring could be isolated for testing.

I dont know if it is legally enforceable.

You dont have to have a Master socket or an NTE5 but you must have a
demarcation point known as the NTTP (Network Termination and Test Point).

The NTE5 performs this function.

A proper NTTP is a connection box designed for multiple lines and is neater
than loads of NTE5's particularly when you have lots of lines terminating
on a
patch panel or PBX. For domestic installations it is almost always an NTE5
