Very bright Orange and Red leds are (and have always been) dramatically
easier to produce and therefore cheaper:

When I worked in Craplins, Blue Leds had just appeared and white was a
"wouldn't it be nice".. the blue leds were nearly a tenner each
whilst
the reds were oh... about 10p each!

White Leds, especially the ultra-bright ones are a big money item to
manufacture: it's going to be some time before we see them at similar
prices to the reds and oranges are just now.

I just went to the TLC website and was unpleasantly surprised to find

white LED GU10's are nearly double the price of the Orange and Reds...
Is
there any reason for this other than to (as bloody always) rip off the
consumer ?
