Not with the *exact* same scenario, but when we bought Sky+ (at the
time via Curry's - I must have been having an off day), the Sky call
centre refused to activate Sky+, saying that an engineer "had to
install it - it won't work otherwise". Apparently, even plugging it
into the existing single LNB (ie just to site the box) would have
"broken" it.

Perhaps I shouldn't have even opened the cardboard box, since exposure
to air would have probably broken it as well, had the call centre had
their way....
