[OT, but caused by HA] Ceilings

I know the group has a wealth of knowledge, so here goes:

I have artexed plaster ceilings, well, after years of HA (shoving cables
etc
through them) they look a bit grubby.

Can anyone recommend something to cover them with? I don't want to pull
them
down due to the mess involved and don't really want to stick plaster board
over the top due to the ammount of kit (speakers, temp sensors etc) I have
mounted there.
For example where I have been lumbering about in the loft, you can now see
cracks where the original plasterboard meets.

So I'm after a good covering that is asthetically pleasing (and HA proof)

Cheers

J
