TBH Shaf the OSD displays are not brilliantly exciting via either
xAP or xPL. It is very much a line/character based based display with a few
colours thrown in and no fonts. Yes it works well for a pop up Caller ID
message or an 'emails waiting' type thing but the nice overlay/transparency
effects and garphics of the Tivo overlay engine are not accesible this way.
(It also doesn't like having a lot of data thrown at it fast or when other
video menu interaction is happening) . I know people were working on
supporting the graphics better but I never saw anything come of this.
We're all still after that holy grail of a nice affordable
graphics/text OSD overlay, that works inline with RGB and S-Video at a
reasonable cost, something like an HTML page overlay or something. Some of
the TV cards and devices like the MVP get close but are superimposed on
their own source material rather than live (inline video cable) sources.
