Thanks Keith (and Frank) - well explained!  Not quite as technical as I
feared.  I'll err on the side of caution then and use a Regulated supply as
it's for a fairly expensive CCTV camera...

REGULATED - The PSU contains a voltage regulator that keeps the output at
the selected voltage eg 12V

UNREGULATED - The PSU does not contain a voltage regulator and the stated
voltage is that which is output at its maximum current eg 12V @ 300mA.
When
drawing 300mA the output will be very close to 12V BUT.... at lower
loadings
eg 100mA, the output voltage can rise significantly and for a 12V PSU its
output could go as high a 17V or more.

If the equipment you are powering contains an internal regulator then is
is
safe to use either but if the equipment expected EXACTLY the stated
voltage
then serious damage could occurr using an unregulated one.

Tried to be as non technical as possible :-)
