Re: [OT] Any Child psychologist spouses out there ?
Hi Dean
I'm no psychologist (I'm a sparks turned HVAC controls engineer) but we do,
like many, have two kids.
They are still fairly young (4 and 6), we have made extensive use of two
books by Dr Christopher Green - Toddler Taming and Beyond Toddlerdom.
Not sure how old yours are but these books may be appropriate.
Dr Chris Green takes a very practical approach to rearing monsters, oops,
sorry, children ;-) and includes many anecdotes from his own experience.
My favourite relates when his young son (3 or 4 years) insisted on getting
in to mum and dads bed during the night. A flash of inspiration saw Chris
Green tying a rope around the banisters and the door knob. Leaving enough
slack to allow the youngster to open the door a bit, he thought that this
would bring a bit of comfort in knowing that the lad wasn't locked in but
there wasn't quite enough of a gap to allow him to get out and pester Mum
and Dad.
Well, during the night Mum and Dad heard him get up and find the door tied
shut. There followed some time of screaming and howling. Eventually Dad got
up to send the young lad back to bed only to find that he had stuck his
head
through the gap but couldn't pull it back in again because of his ears!!!!!
The point of the story is that, as a parent, you will do many things that,
at the time, seem like a good thing to do. Something goes wrong and you end
up blaming yourself for doing "terrible things" to your children.
The truth
is that they never remember little things like getting their head trapped
for half an hour but will remember the ice-cream at the seaside!!
So, it depends on the age of your nippers but if they are sub 9-10, I can
thoroughly recommend the above books
HTH
Regards
Neil
