You actually need the _client_ not the server.
The difference is historical - all the useful functionality, including
streaming TO a network has been moved over into the client now.
Runs under linux and Windows. I use it under Windows, and it will
stream any DirectShow input (which should mean pretty much any capture
card, AIUI.)
I use it, albeit to stream pre-captured video and audio, and find it
works well. One of the _really_ nice features is that it will do a
multicast stream, so you can stream to multiple clients round the
house with only a single stream (and thus no material extra network load.)
