dead cdrom drive

Hi,

I kept my old motherboard when I upgraded and decided to use it for
something useful. I tried to put together a pc for 24/7 HA use. I
bought a cdrom drive which has only been used lightly. I have found
that it no longer works.

It makes a clicking noise as if it is trying to lift the cd, over and
over again but Windows cannot read from the drive. I had an old (8x) cdrom
drive and substituted that. It worked for a couple of weeks but now
that has developed exactly the same fault.

Is this a common failure? I am just suprised that it has happened to 2
drives in the same machine in such a short space of time. I daren't
try my writer in there in case it gets killed too!

Thanks.
