OT - setting up a Vigor 2600G with a Buffalo access point

I've been having some serious headache trying to get the Buffalo G54
access point to see my router. My router has the following properties:

IP: 192.168.16.1
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
I've turned all security settings off

My access point has the following:

IP: 192.168.16.18
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.16.1

I've given my laptop (connected to the access point) an IP address
192.168.16.18

My laptop can ping the access point (there's a physical connection). But I
can't get the router to see the AP or vice-versa. Please help!
