graphics card tv out [can't afford touch screen ;( ]

Hi I can't afford the ebay touch screens but I figured since I
already have a tv in the room, why not use that for HA output? I
tried connecting the tv with composite and I could not read the
writing under the icons on my desktop. Ok, I guess I am not going to
use the tv for detailed work but it shows that composite connection
is not very good. I tried s-video and as you would expect it is a
much sharper picture. The question is, if I move the pc into another
room to hide the noise of the fan, does a long cable run degrade the
picture even more noticeably? What is the longest s-video run
possible? If I get one of those x10 rf all-in-one remotes with
optional pc module, I was thinking I could use that to navigate a
menu of cds to use as a jukebox. Does that sound possible? Thanks.
