I run a HTPC to my NEC plasma from about 10 meters and I am using a
Lindy 10m DVI cable with good results:

there is a BUT... If the the DVI out adaptor on the Hitachi box (is
it HDMI or DVI-D ?) does not have sufficient power to drive the
cable you may experience difficulties. When building the HTPC I
looked around the forums and they mostly suggested a Radeon 9600 as
a good enough graphic card, but because a lot of the 9600's out
there don't have a dedicated power port, they were failing over long
DVI cables. The 9800's do have power input and that's what I am
using.
With true/digital DVI (i.e DVI-D) signal quality is not an issue, if
gets there, it will give full performance. On analog, the quality of
signal is a big factor in picture quality. For my non-HTPC viewing
(Sky+, DVD) I use a Lumagen Pro scaler which feeds into the 5 BNC
RGBVH of the NEC. There I have an expensive 10m 5xBNC
(bettercables.com) and the quality difference is very noticeable.
