I am certain there are cheaper and more elegant solutions, but you
could use one or multiple Xantech 686-10 speaker selectors coupled
with a Xantech RS232IR which will switch RS232 to IR. You could
further use the RS232IR to give RS232 control of other IR devices.

(The 686-10 is a stand alone switcher. It allows the installer and
user to turn six pairs of speakers ON and OFF by way of infrared
commands. A particular room may be given the ability to turn only its
own speakers on or off. Another room, such as the main control room,
may be given control of the entire house in a "party mode".)

As I said I#m certain cheaper alternatives exist but the Xantech kit
is fairly bullet proof.
