Server streaming (NTL)

I have found that I am unable to listen to a number of radio
stations via the SlimServer - for example Virgin Radio on
http://64.236.34.192:80 . Some
other apps have varying degrees of
difficulty with this - and other mp3 hardware players too.
After a bit of narrowing down it appears this is to do with NTL's
transparent proxies getting in the way. The effect is that the audio is
scrambled to make the station unlistenable here. A small audio sample is
here if you're interested http://www.ukusa.demon.co.uk/Example.mp3
.
It appears some of NTL's proxies eg Inktomi behave differently to
others and for other applications (eg IE) it has been suggested I change
the
http proxy and this worked getting around another 'known' problem but
SlimServer does not have a settable proxy :-(
So is there a way around this by installing say my own local proxy
that then redirects all my 'port 80' traffic elsewhere to a second
configurable proxy for my whole LAN ? I have W2K/ W3K or similar and a
spare
machine or similar if needs be from Action pack. I assume this would then
become my local 'gateway' rather than the existing hardware router and it
would in turn onwardly use my router as its gateway. NB I am all Windows
here (before anyone mentions Linux), and connect to NTL cable via a NAT
setup provided by a Vigor 2200 router.
I assume there is no way to globally apply a proxy to all http requests on
a
single XP machine (from any/all the different apps) by some configuration
option on that machine .
There is a bit of background here on the problem
