Chances are they have a capacitive dividor as a power supply, these fail
when
dimmed in an eventfull way, the high frequency components of the chopped
sinewave will see a very low impedance from the capacitors, and either blow
a
fuse in the units, or else blow the capacitors up.

Same as trying to run an x10 module off an inverter.. not pretty.
