As far as I am aware Nick is correct - a retailer can charge a customer for
goods that they have ordered even if they aren't is stock at the time. This
is common practise for items which are "special order" or
"made to measure"
as it (hopefully) ensures that the customer will actually take the goods
that they have ordered rather than changing their minds and leaving the
retailer with something that they can do nothing with.
We generally do not charge cards until goods are in stock and ready to ship
(as this makes keeping track of what has and has not been paid for much
easier) however there are exceptions to this rule - mainly for the Silent
Gliss curtain rails which are made to order by Silent Gliss.
