Simon, not entirely sure about why you require what you do (not taking much
processing power).
I use autoGK too and have it output both an AC-3 track and a MP3 track
embedded in the avi file.
That way, I can watch stuff in glorious surround, and swmob can use the TV
speakers for unglorious stereo ;)

To get two tracks, press ctrl-f10 in autogk and a 2nd track option will
appear below the normal "Audio Track" option.

Select the same ac-3 track for both and away you go.
Any output size of two CD's or greater will automatically store the 1st
track as AC-3 and the second as downmixed mp3.
On the SC, with beta 1.4, press button B to switch between tracks (though
this occasionally freezes the video and you have to stop it and re-select
the movie.
