Have a look at IPCop aswell (www.ipcop.org) a fork of smoothwall a while
back.

I personally prefer it.

Your right about probably not being the best way but I like a challenge.
Why
else would I develop for Windows CE for a job???

If you want a simple to install Linux distribution for your firewall, have
a
look at www.smoothwall.org this is a distribution tailored specifically
for
use as a firewall and has some "nice" web based front ends to
configure
it.
A firewall box is probably not the box you should be using to
"tinker" and
learn your way about Linux :-)
