Dave,

If you want a simple to install Linux distribution for your firewall, have
a
look at www.smoothwall.org this is a distribution tailored specifically for
use as a firewall and has some "nice" web based front ends to
configure it.
A firewall box is probably not the box you should be using to
"tinker" and
learn your way about Linux :-)
