Had loads of problems with this at a company we do work for - always showed
up with transfering large amounts of data accross the network...
I think your on the right lines with the smb signing. There is a 'local
security policy' that you can tweak to turn it off (its on by default on
domain controllers) - if you have a DC then your going to have to tweak the
'domain controllers group policy object' in active directory to turn it
off...

in the local security policy editor (or editing your Group Policy Object
with Active Directory Users Computers ) you need to go to 'Local Policy
->
Security Policy and disable (turn off) 'Digitaly Sign Server Communications
always' and 'when possible'

I havnt got access to an XP machine at the mo but I would guess that the
area you need in 'local sec pol' should be the same...

(all this is documented on MS's kb (support.microsoft.com) - cant remember
the kb numbers - sorry)

Microsoft 'apparently (!) fixed this with SP4 for W2k so If you havnt got
that - you may want to first.

Hope this is a pointer in the right direction :)

Oh the other thing - the site in question is also running NAI Total Virus
Defence - that buggers it too!
