Yep,
MAC addresses are supposed to be unique, and companies producing standard
compliant kit are supposed to get a unique vendor ID and with it the rights
to that "block" of MAC addresses...
thing is, the process is *ridiculously* expensive: more than 20K for a
vendor ID, and then an additional charge to actually *use* the block!!
Turbonet as a small-run manufacture would have been ten times the cost if

had a "proper" MAC address assigned.
Most hobbyist projects look for a block assigned to a now dead company, and
use a few MAC addresses from the pool, with the hope that whilst not
globally unique, it's locally uinique, or at least "uniqueish"
