RE: Re: G4 Powerbook 17
The 3G iTrip was originally due for launch at the end of August, then the
end of Sept, now the end of Oct. Production issues apparently, but having
used the 2G version, it really is the best execution of an FM solution for
the iPOD - worth the wait. I had been waiting for one to use in my car,
bu=
t
my new car has got a 3.5 aux jack fitted, so no longer need it. Griffin
charge silly money for shipping, but www.welovemacs.com
<http://www.welovemacs.com>
is a little more reasonable, particularly if
you're ordering a few (there's always a ready market on eBay, especially
no=
w
that it's been deemed illegal for use in the UK).

Oh, and yes, the iPOD is fantastic, nothing else comes close!

Again... A most excellent piece of apple kit.. I have the rev3 15gig
model... No longer made now sadly...
Easy to use, syncs your calendar, etc... Fantastic sound quality...
My only gripe is the shiny metal back cover... You cant go near it without
getting it covered in finger prints!
There is indeed an FM solution for them... But Apple have stopped selling
i=
t
in the UK, as like most its illegal over here! Its called the iTrip - and
is made by Griffin Technology - the same people who make the PowerMate (the
worlds coolest volume knob! - also useful if your editing video, cutting
tracks together)
Looking on ebay, there are a few in the UK, but none are suitable for the
new 3G iPods, so you'd either have to buy from the US, or wait a while :-)
Might be worth waiting again though... Apple have a "musicmedia"
event
planned for tomorrow... Several things are rumoured...
1. iPod accessories - rumoured to be a recording device, bluetooth
headphones and a new "multimedia dock"
2. iTunes Music Store for Windows - hopefully this also means the arrival
o=
f
iTunes for Windows
iTunes Music Store for Europe is also planned for early next year...
The iPod also uses the AAC compression format, which is more efficient than
MP3, and has better quality...
Again... Any more questions, feel free :-)

hows the ipod - this on my list also.
(now for the HA link :-))
it is possible to get wireless FM solutions for the ipod.
would make a great home audio choice if you are happy with
the 10/20/40gb on board :-)

If your talking really and truly "on the go" then I'd look at the
new 12"
PowerBook... All the features.. Just much much smaller :-) If it's
the
screen estate that you want then you would be able to cope with it
on the
road, but you would notice it! (or consider the new 15")
=20=20=20=20=20=20
If your buying new though I'd wait a week or so for Panther to be
released... And then get it included... At the moment its free for
current
buyers... But you have to pay P&P costs
=20=20=20=20=20=20
I know... The =A3-$ conversion rate is always painful... Its better
with Apple
than most though...

Guys,
=20=20=20=20=20=20
1Gig 17" Powerbook owner here :-)
=20=20=20=20=20=20
If I start gushing please forgive me... ;-)
=20=20=20=20=20=20
My main reason for purchase (apart from looks) was that I work with
PC's all
day... And fancied a change in the evenings and at weekends... I
still have
my P4 Shuttle... But its not been on anywhere near as much as it
used to be!
=20=20=20=20=20=20
The screen is about the best I have seen on a laptop and I've seen a
few!
(previous contract was laptop evaluation for large blue-chip co)
=20=20=20=20=20=20
Its bright, crisp and of course.... HUGE :-) Perfect for massive
spreadsheets, some image editing, making of videos, or just two word
docs
side by side - wicked for watching the odd DVD too!
=20=20=20=20=20=20
The weight of the laptop itself is actually not that bad.. I carry
it with
me every day to work and back and I don't notice that much
difference
between it and the ThinkPad it replaced, it's the expression on
peoples
faces when you "get it out" that does it for me... As if to say
"so
thin,
yet so powerful...... Wow"
=20=20=20=20=20=20
OS X is a dream to use, yes it does crash now and then (nowhere near
as
often as XP does on this dell I'm typing on now!) but its only the
one app
that crashes and you can easily continue working. You also have the
beauty
that underneath it all is a strong BSD Unix, so if you want you can
run all
your unix programs - I've had KDE and Evolution running on top of OS
X
without a problem. Of course.. If you just have to have Windows XP,
then
you can run it up in a Virtual PC session.
=20=20=20=20=20=20
One word of warning... The simple purchase of a mac doesn't stop
there... I
bought this laptop a good few months ago now... Since then a new
iPod has
appeared, then came the new wireless keyboard and mouse, and panther
(OS X
10.3) is preordered for delivery on the 24th - this should add a
good deal
of speed.
=20=20=20=20=20=20
Just noticed that as I have been typing this someone has mentioned
theres
one in the refurb store... I was going to mention this too. My
PB17" came
>from
after the
laptop itself was released, it cost me =A31950 including VAT, at a
time when
the laptop was going new for =A32600. Add to that the fact that the
laptop I
received was BRAND NEW (a cancelled order) then I was well chuffed
at my
saving (especially since I have claimed the VAT back too, as it was
a
company purchase!) As Apple say, most refurb stock is either brand
new or
has been returned within 7 days, comes with a clean bill of health
and the
remainder of its AppleCare warranty - which can be extended - there
may
however be cosmetic marks or scratches on the item... I was lucky
:-)
=20=20=20=20=20=20
There.. I've rambled for a little too long... Any questions on any
aspect I
havent talked about (or ones that I have) then please feel free to
ask!

I have been wanting to get a 17" powerbook for a while now but I
have not
had the cash.

It is a good time top get a 17 as they have just been updated and
should
remain current for 6 months.

The forums over here are a good place to get thoughs on the new 17
