I suppose it depends on how people intend to use the database. The
initial thread was regarding automated grocery shopping and hence I
think there is a need for tables specifically aimed at the 'Big 4
supermarkets'. This might simply be one table for each supermarket with
barcode and ordercode. For me, it would be good to be able to scan a
product, and if the item has never been scanned locally before, search
an online system in the hope that specific ordering information could be
found. Keeping this info local seems a shame as there is probably a
large overlap in the products people buy and the database could be
populated quite quickly if enough people used it.
But I guess that is the question, how many people are there with barcode
scanners that would use such a system?
