"Hosts" relates to pur tcp-ip, resolving names to IP addresses..
It does the
same thing as DNS

"lmhosts" is Lan Manager hosts, and it converts windows machine
names to IP
addresses, as well as  allowing you to preload Domain Controllers and so
on.. It's really only used in the absence of a WINS Server, or when using
windows networking across a WAN.

in simple terms, "hosts" lets you resolve an internet hostname
without using
DNS, "lmhosts" lets you resolve a machinename without using WINS,
or waiting
on the windows networking to catch up.

if you want to resolve an internet hostname, such as www.diyha.co.uk, that
goes in your hosts file.
