Installing a BB router

Guys

Forgive my ignorance on this, I'm not a network guru like some of you.
It's
for my HA server, so at least it's not OT ;-)

I'm just installing my ASDL modem/switch (NetGear DG824M), and have set
everything up just as it should be, and I appear to have a live ADSL
connection. However, no matter what I tried, it wouldn't work until I
deleted a Network Bridge.

Soooo, Q1: What's a network bridge, and why have I got one?
and, more importantly, Q2, I've deleted it, and the BB connection is now
working a treat, but it didn't fully delete, and now when I try is just
says
there's been a corruption and I'll need to restore from an early date
(which
I can do if necessary).

The old network (which apparently used the bridge) was just a simple 4 PC
network through an el-cheapo Scan switch.

TIA

Pete
