Just a thought..

The office you are opening... Are they based on templates or anything that
was originally on a server?

If so, then word especially will try and find the original location of the
template before it will open the file... If it cant (ie no network
attached)
then it will just open it.. But if it is able to (ie network cable plugged
in), then it will try and find it

I saw this a lot of times working for a big multinational, where templates
where stored on local site servers and people in other countries complained
doco's were slow to open...

The eventual workaround?  Once the document was complete it was printed to
a
PDF :-)
