Ah right... Could be it... It does tend to sit there quite a bit...
Although
when thrashed hard I've never seen any problems either...

Perhaps Maxtor got wise and put fans in?  Mine definitely has one...

How are you using them? Mine were used as external devices on my home media
server and thus were being read from and written to constantly ... when on
a
"normal" PC sitting idling most of the time they were OK.

They *SHOULD* have had a fan in from the outset but mine definitely don't -
I think Tony Butler had similar problems to me too.
