Re: [REPOST] External drive caddies.

I *had* one of those... I soon got rid...

1. There's a fan in it (not a problem on its own) - it was soo noisy - at
the time I had a Dell Precision - not the quietest Dell you can get
though... and I could easily hear the drive above it... I could with a
Shuttle too

2. A few weeks after I bought it the little plastic lug inside the power
connector broke off.. the power connector never seemed to "fit"
properly
anyway (was always loose)

3. I dont know if this is coincidence or not, but I had a 60gig Maxtor
drive in it, which I had previously had inside my machine for a year
without problem... a few months after it going into this enclosure it
developed read problems and wouldnt spin up properly (OK, I did turn the
drive on and off with the PC, but it was never writing when I turned it on
or off...)

Before it failed completely I went out and bought a Maxtor 5000XT drive
(the 250GB firewire/usb jobbie) and copied all my data across to it and
sent the old drive off to Maxtor, sure enough they tested it and confirmed
it had a problem... and sent me a nice new 80gig drive... that went into
the enclosure and both had a quick date with eBay :-)

I cant fault the Maxtor though.. it rocks... is turned on and off with the
PC and has been rock solid for over 6 months now... (irrelevant i know...
but if anyone is considering one...)

in short... imho.. stay away from that enclosure!

The best external cases I have seen in a long time are the "Pyro"
cases..
they arent particularly pretty and are quite large.. but they are awesome
:D
