I thought this as well, however while playing with my new IPAQ 5550 I
managed to pickup a printer in an office 3 doors away from me, now while
it's not *very* far (12M) it is 3 offices away with all the hardware and
walls involved !

I was quite surprised, and also by the strength of the signal, altho this
may be because it is a mains powered Bluetooth printer.

So I wouldn't assume a person has to be *very* close to you.
