There is also a Win only version called UltraVNC IIRC.

Indeed - it can seem like ages waiting for explorer to update etc. The
experience is not improved either by clicking in the wrong place &
waiting
for the *wrong* page to load :-)

When I get a spare few minutes I'll give Patrick's suggestion a try though,
if it's noticeably faster it may be worth a shot.
