TS definitely would be an option except that I have many HA apps running on
the server (and not as services) - therefore I need to connect to a running
session rather than creating a new one :(

Maybe I was running the standard ver?

TightVNC is a secure version of VNC, and is dramatically faster.  It
offers JPEG compression, and runs fast even over 56k dialup, IME.
IIRC, you're still limited to just a single password for each machine
though.  These days, I stick to Terminal Services, as it's much more
user-friendly.
