Traceroute will only show the interface on your side of any router so is
not
guaranteed to give you your Internet side IP address. Sometimes PPP works
to
make the dial-up link appear the same IP both ways (and hence can give you
your IP address) - but not always.

Certainly my Cisco + ISDN + Freeserve doesnt give show my IP address via
traceroute.

Be careful of the WebPages that show you your IP - some can be confused by
WebCaches (Which Freeserve uses)

e.g. tonight my ISDN dialer interface is "Dialer2 81.78.102.80"

A traceroute gives....

C:\>tracert www.automatedhome.co.uk

Tracing route to www.automatedhome.co.uk [216.167.90.227]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <10 ms <10 ms <10 ms 172.27.1.253
2 40 ms 31 ms 40 ms gorilla.lns.watford.access.planet.net.uk
[195.92.66.193]
3 40 ms 40 ms 40 ms lettuce.as5388.net [195.92.66.2]
4 40 ms 40 ms 40 ms 195.50.116.185
5 40 ms 40 ms 40 ms gigabitethernet6-0.core2.London1.Level3.net
[212.187.131.46]
etc etc. (all the way to the States ??)

And a Cache aware web-page gives...

REMOTE_ADDR 195.92.67.209
HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR 81.78.102.80
HTTP_VIA 1.1 webcacheH09 (NetCache NetApp/5.3.1R2)

Dean

And no, I dont care about publishing a dial-up IP address (which actually
changed during the above without me noticing) and I know is 172.27.1.x isnt
RFC1918 - but the reasons are lost in history and I'm too lazy to change it
now ;-D

traceroute / tracert to a well known site is one option. The second
(or third)hop would typically reflect your router's address.
