I don't think RH9 is fully stable yet. RH8 might be a better choice for
now.

tar xvzf asterisk-0.4.0.tar.gz (or the latest CVS version)
cd asterisk-0.4.0
make
make install
make samples (optional)
(Configure the many configuration files in /etc/asterisk directory)
./asterisk -vvvc

I understand that Andy (Powell) has written Part 1 of "Guide to
Asterisk"
but he hasn't publicised the URL yet.
