Thanks Nigel

do you have any details such as manufacturers or websites for gennys with
self start panels? How do I know if the genny produces clean enough power
for the UPS? Point taken on the loading, I was considering somewhere
between
5 and 10KVA but with oil burner and underfloor heating meaning a fairly low
load I too will need to consider the loading of the genny.

Regards
Mick

Mick,

You need to ensure that the genny produces power clean enough to satisfy
the
ups otherwise it will continue to run on the battery.

Also gennys run best at 60 to 80% loads so sizing is important, I am
looking
at about 10KVA with two immersion heaters (3Kw) in a heat store to dump
power when the house is on low load....

Self start panels are commercially available for this size of generator
and
that is the way I will e going.

OK something on topic for a change;)

Scenario is as follows.....

Generator in outside boilerhouse

3xUPS (one with interface to Server PC) inside main house running some
lighting and some computer/networking kit.

Every imaginable cable type running between the boiler house and the main
house and a duct to run more if needed.

Questions are...
How do I get the generator to autostart if there is a mains failure?
Do I need a special generator (I haven't picked one yet)?
I believe the wiring needs to be isolated from the mains when the
generator
is running how do I do this automatically?
How do I get the system to cut over to the mains once the power is back?
Finally how do I do all of this on a reasonable budget?

Thanks in advance for any ideas
Mick
