I have had NTL -> Video -> TV no problem so I suspect it is the video
not liking the amp.

Does Video -> Amp -> TV work ?
If so, the problem is with the cable box not liking the input to the
video, or the video is knackered, otherwise the problem is with the
the video not liking the input to the amp.
.... thats what happens when you try to type a reply whilst listening
to an Audio Conference :-(
