Should really go to the Tivo list... ;>

But basically, you can take a backup image from a good Tivo (either your
brother's or I can give you mine) and restore it to a new drive - of any
size you like as long as it's at least 40GB, so if you fancy popping in
a 120GB, or even 2, now's the time! :-)

The serial number for your Tivo is held on a chip on the board, so once
you have a working hard drive back in it, everything will go back to
normal and be running under whatever subscription you had before your
box died.

Best bet is to pop over to the Tivo group and continue discussions
