If you have used unscreened cable then its good practice to earth the
unused
cores, if not they can act as an ariel inducing interference into the used
cores.
If the cable is screened you must earth the screen keeping the tails as
short as possible inside the panel, don't forget to keep the earthing
continuous when passing through a detector or joint.
