QOS makes and amazing difference on my adsl line for example when im
downloading and at full rate 60kb/s or if im uploading at 30kb/s ssh
would freeze completely. Since implementing QOS on my linux box its
stopped that completely, so the same should apply to VoIP like keith
says.

Kind Regards,
Chris Bond

They may well do.

For VOIP it is vital that the packets get through quickly and in the
right
order to avoid speech break up. In fact, if the delay get too great the
call
drops. To counter this additional information is added to the packets
and
the routers prioritise this traffic to guarantee Quality Of Service
(QOS).

I have seen demos where QOS was turned on and off and the differences
are
dramaic to say the least.

As traffic increases there will probably be an option to have QOS
routing
for a fee!

...and if and when VoIP takes off, will ISP's charge extra for this type
of traffic? What happens in the future when phone lines disappear and
are replaced with this kind of technology - I guess someone will want
more money!

I see that someone has already answered "Yes, I have an IP
phone"...

If this is you, can I ask a couple of dumb questions?

1: What do I need to phone a "normal" phone from an IP phone?

2: How much does it cost?

Regards,

Mark
