Re: [OT] Windows DNS and hosts file...
Hiya,
If memory serves - the hosts file (and lmhosts file) is used by the client
first. If there is no entry there it goes to your DNS server...
Things can get a little confusing when you are logged onto the server
console. As a 'client' you are subject to the above rule... check (lm)hosts
file -> cant find it , go ask a dns server (if you have one set in your
IP
stack). If your DNS server does not have an anser it then go's out to your
'forwarders' or direct to the root servers for the answer.
So, simply(?) if you set up your hosts file with all these aliases then,
when you are logged onto the server console (not over the network) and do a
lookup it will find the answer from your hosts file.
Things get a little more involved if you want to set this up for more than
one pc.
You could make the entries in your DNS server directly but then you are
taking ownship (from your lans point of view) for the other domains and
things would soon get messy...
One simple option is to copy this new hosts file to each client pc -job
done, the only drawback is if you need to update it more frequently, you
have numerous machine or dont like the idea of having copies all over the
place that can get out of sync. You would have to keep re-copying this file
around.
The way around that is to use LMHOSTS (search for lmhosts.sam). This is
another text file (aling the same lines of hosts) but you can link files
together. So your clients point to a central lmhosts file that has the main
tables in it. If you have a look at lmhosts.sam there is examples in it,
just remember to create a LMHOSTS file (drop the .sam)
Sorry to waffle (hope I've not upset the list)
Wayne.
