Thanks Keith,

I discovered that the original fax lead (BT plug with socket to
RJ11) had a 6 pin RJ11 plug and used pin 1, 3 and 4. It was the pin
1 that got me.

What a bad day - fax problems, exchange server corrupted, Cat5 cable
tester broke, RJ11 crimp tool buggered my RJ11 plugs and my dog
won't eat anything!!!
