It's always better that way, because there is no connection on the
cable, which can become disconnected.
I posted wiring diagram a while ago in the images section of the group
web site.
Hope that it's still there.

Cheers.  Having spoken to our telecoms boffin here at work, it seems it
might be easiest to buy a BT extension cable, and just crimp an RJ45
connector on.  As a bonus, the cable is the perfect length.
