Th anser to "how much current can a cable carry?" is, of course,
it
depends, and what it depends on is primarily voltage drop and
temprature.
Assuming voltage drop doesnt trump temprature (which is almost always
the case for short runs), 1.0mm T&E cable clipped to a wall is good
for 15A, and if in a wall, for 11A. 1.5mm cable is 19.5A clipped to
wall, 14A in a wall.
Also assumes that cables arent bunched, and are not heated by
external things, and is MCB protected.
Th correct answer is (of course) that you should calculate out each
run according the the methods in the regs. But in my experience, few
sparks do.
