Can I make a simple sugesstion?

Can the people who are interested in discussing this issue carry on off
the list? There seem to be a few of us who have got some ideas and it
may be worthwhile discussing them.

Anyone join me?

Ben

This is something that is going to be very difficult to resolve.

To confirm what Ken said here are some stats I ran on the members list
yesterday.

DeliveryMethod Members

No Email 367
Individual Emails 349
Daily Digest 103
Special Notices 52

The fact that 367 members of this list do not receive any email means
one of two things, either a lot of people dont hear a lot of what
happens ( which may account for why we never hear from some of them ) OR
they ONLY use the Web Interface.

Since the Nimda Virus caused such chaos about 18 months ago, different
companies have clamped down on internet usage in different way. Some
people can no longer access their private email from work either by POP3
or Webmail interfaces (that is the case for me), some people can no
longer visit websites such as Yahoo.

Various people have posted about the different ports that are blocked
>from
display a stern warning about misuse of the internet and log access
attempts to unapproved sites. What is really annoying is that although
some sites I visit for legitimate purposes are OK, the popups launched
by them are on the "verbotten" list :-(

Whatever solution we search for NEEDS to supply MOST of the features
that Yahoo does. Given the destructive power of many of the viruses out
there now and in the future we need to be very careful about what we
decide to do.

The LAST thing we want is to have to have two solutions...

UKHA_MailingList for those who prefer mail
UKHA_WebForum for those who want or need a web interface

Yahoo was very good, it is now not so good but it may be because it is a
victim of its own success.

Mark is looking for alternatives so I think we should let this rest for
a while and anyone who finds a possible solution should send it directly
to Mark for evaluation.

No, about 50% are web access and 50% mail so by doing that you would
alienate or p1ss off 50% of the people using the group, so it's really
not an option. Both mails *and* web access is needed whatever way it
goes and a lot of the controls would be nice as well. The moderator
controls are there with good reason and few services seem to offer the
options that Yahoo does, I know something could be configured to suit
out purpose but that means time, which in turn means money. One of the
biggest advantages of the way things are at the moment is that lack of
SPAM, other than Yahoo's which we cannot do much about, banning of
attachments and other niceties which, since they were implemented by
Mark last year have made a hell of a difference IMO.
