Re: Halogens for thickies

Not really eletrocution but more a case of heat. Bathroom halogens need to
be sealed to IP65 standards and because they are sealed in the cooler you
can get the bulb to work the better. 12v halogens with dichroic 35w bulb
are normally used to get the right balance of light to heat.

>> Are they cheaper to run?

Not really after all it's the wattage that counts and you lose a bit in the
transformer. One thing to be careful of with LV hlaogens is that you use a
suitable cable from the transformer to the lights as with low voltages the
current increase. e.g. a 50w halogens on 240v = 0.2Amps but at 12v =
4.16Amps, so if you get 4 or 5 halogens on one run you are looking at ~ 20
Amps so normal 1.5mm Twin and Earth won't do. In practise it is easier to
run seperate 1.5mm wires to each Halogen if the distances aren't too far
apart.

The electrical transformers tend to quite small so normally just get pushed
up through into the floor cavity through one of the holes for the
downlights.
