All the Matrox cards certainly do still support separate video overlay
output (DVD etc) and desktop out. I thought most other cards also had
similar features - are you 100% that the all-in-wonder doesn't offer this?

I believe the Matrox G500 dualhead cards may do what you want...

I believe these are available in versions that include a DVI port, and I
believe they can set independent resolutions & refresh rates. The G400
dualhead I have has custom modes for doing various scenarios automatically,
such as "DVD-MAX" mode which automatically switches the TV out
display to a
full-screen DVD display when one is playing, and shows a Windows desktop at
other times... I'm sure things have moved on a bit since I got mine....
