If you could decode the data output from the reader you could get the cost
down, the ones we have used are made by HID, they are a 15mm thick panel
about 300*300, the card is an active one about 10mm thick.
HID will not deal with you directly neither would our supplier, I would be
happy to supply the bits for the price I pay.
I will check the prices tomorrow and see if I can find a site with the spec
on.

As little as possible (!) but £400 would be about my maximum, if that was
the only option.  I found lots of very short range sensors, but couldn't
think of a reliable way of mounting the sensor so that the car/bike
triggered it.  (I wonder what component of the sensor is the expensive
bit!)

Could you point me at a supplier?
