What type and size of screen will you be using?

It's a matter of finding the best compromise between performance and
aesthetics. In an ideal set up the left and rights would be level with the
centre speaker maintaining a consistent soundstage across the front.
However, if you're using a projection screen this can often mean having the
centre lower than would be ideal, and certainly lower than might be
acceptable for the left and right (either from a looks or little fingers
point of view). The choice then becomes whether to have the L/R to the
sides
of the screen, which can look a bit odd especially in a lounge, or higher
up
as has been suggested. Whilst this latter position separates the centre
from
L/R by more than would be ideal, it can still work very well especially if
the speakers have a wide dispersion (like the Bose speakers which have been
mentioned).

The surrounds will work best at the levels you're suggested, creating a
nicely diffused and ambient sound, so this shouldn't be a problem.

Hope this is of help, if you need any more info feel free to mail or call
me
off list.

I'm just in the process of finalising my cable plans for the new house and
have reached the audio/surround sound cabling issues. Because of the
universal attraction of little probing fingers to expensive speaker cones
then floor/stand mounted speakers are out and a quality sub/sat package is
in. The set up will also need to work reasonably in stereo as well so I
need
positions that give the best sound for both situations. The room is 5m x 4m
with the screen in the centre of one of the 5m walls, so my first guess at
placement is to locate the speakers in the four corners of the room with
the
drivers pointing back to the main seating area. The centre front will sit
underneath the screen, and I'm considering wiring for a rear centre for the
full 6.1 experience although again it may well have to sit at the
wall/ceiling boundary.

I'd appreciate any advice from those that have played with speaker
placement, and maybe those in the group who work on custom installations
could add their personal & professional views.

Thanks

Neil B.
