Frank,

A jog dial is a rotary knob that (typically) allows you to scroll though
menus; rotating the knob different directions moves the selection up &
down. A push on the knob usually selects the highlighted item. It's a bit
like scrolling through a menu with cursor keys and then pressing Enter. Jog
dials are on some mobile phones, and shown here: http://www.zonaudio.com/products/ZAC-60.php

I'm looking to put one in a car to control MP3 playback, amongst other
things, so the fewer separate buttons I have to distract me the better :-)

The alternative to a jog dial etc. would be a nice cheap touchscreen :-)
The Proface sounds interesting - I make it around GBP 400. CPC (and others)
do non-touch TFT monitors for GBP 200-300 intended for portable DVD players
etc. so if the Proface is cased, and input-signal ready, it doesn't sound
too bad.

Cheers,

Tim H.
