There is GRPS coverage through one of the domestic Portuguese networks
apparently but I don't know how much it would cost. Calls made there on my
Orange account will cost 70p per minute! I think a PAYG sim card is the
best bet too :-)

Paul,

just took a look at the Orange website and there's no generic Orange
cover in Portugal so I doubt the GPRS would work (though Vodaphone
is there so it might). Looks like a new SIM is probably your best
bet as others have said.
